New admissions code before Parliament
18/12/08 The revised School Admissions Code has been laid before Parliament, following the consultation over the summer. A controversial proposal to allow schools to give priority to children whose parents signed a statement supporting the school's ethos has been dropped, and a number of other changes have been made to the consultation version. These include a re-written appendix on Choice Advice, with a greater emphasis on targeting parents with the greatest need of support, following the evaluation of the scheme by Sheffield Hallam University.
Martin Rogers, CSN policy consultant, welcomed the changes: "The overall thrust of the Code is to make admission arrangements clearer, fairer and easier for parents to understand and operate. The changes made to the consultation draft represent further improvement." A briefing on the consultation is available to LGiU members and CSN subscribers. Read the revised code on the DCST website. A CSN briefing on the new code will be published soon.
